Pyrethrum is a natural insecticide derived from the dried flower heads of certain species of the chrysanthemum genus, primarily Chrysanthemum cinerariifolium and Chrysanthemum coccineum. Native to the Balkan region (particularly Dalmatia) and parts of the Middle East, these daisy-like flowers produce a potent neurotoxin that targets the nervous systems of insects, causing rapid paralysis and death.
Unlike synthetic chemical pesticides, pyrethrum is valued for its low toxicity to mammals and birds, its biodegradable nature, and its quick breakdown in sunlight and air. It is widely used in organic farming, household insect sprays, pet shampoos (to kill fleas), and mosquito control products. However, while effective against flying and crawling insects, it must be used carefully to avoid harming beneficial pollinators like bees. The active components, known as pyrethrins, have also inspired the development of synthetic analogues called pyrethroids, which are more stable and longer-lasting.
1. Organic Farming & Gardening
Broad-spectrum pest control – Effective against aphids, thrips, whiteflies, cabbage worms, spider mites, and many other common pests.
Short pre-harvest interval – Because it breaks down quickly and leaves little residue, it can be used close to harvest time.
Certified organic use – Approved by USDA Organic and EU Organic regulations for use on certified organic crops.
2. Household Pest Control
Household sprays – Spray directly on flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, ants, etc., causing rapid paralysis (knockdown) and death within minutes.
Pet care – Added to dog shampoos or spot-on treatments to safely kill fleas and lice.
Stored grain protection – Mixed into stored grains or beans to control rice weevils and Indian meal moths.
3. Public Health & Animal Shelters
Mosquito control – Used in outdoor thermal fogging or mosquito coils to kill adult mosquitoes (note: also toxic to bees and butterflies).
Livestock & poultry houses – Sprayed in barns and coops to control stable flies and mites, helping reduce disease transmission.
4. Synergistic Formulations
With synergists – Often combined with piperonyl butoxide (PBO), which inhibits pest detoxification enzymes and greatly increases effectiveness.
With synthetic pyrethroids – Mixed to overcome pyrethrum's poor photostability (only 1–2 days of field persistence), extending residual protection.
